Danushkodi ,once a thriving sea port ,with regular trading with Sri Lanka was declared as 'Ghost Town' and unfit for living after the 1964 cyclone which washed away the whole town including a train load of passengers.Danushkodi lies at the southern tip of 'Rameswaram ,at the eastern coast of Tamil Nadu state of India.Infact it has the only land border between India and Srilanka which is one of the smallest in the world, just 50 yards in length on a sand dune in Palk strait.A series of rocks and islets found in a line are shown as remnants of the ancient Setu(sanskrit word for bridge),also called as Rama's Bridge.
These days, the villages are accessible only by fourwheel drives or fish carts and the villages are inhabited by small groups of fisher folks who live in ramshackled huts surrounded by ruins. I landed up in danushkodi on a bike with my friend aj,with no knowledge of the place and people and could only spent two days and realised how simple and beautiful life can be even under such hostile living conditions.
